What is an English Gentleman if not a bowler-hatted, umbrella-carrying urban esquire?

Since Mr Brigg began making umbrellas in 1836, our umbrellas have been synonymous with English elegance and practicality. Our most sensible of monarchs, Queen Victoria, knew a thing or two about keeping up appearances and honoured us with a Royal Warrant in 1893. Today, we are still keeping the nation dry using unchanged manufacturing techniques.

Colour your own world.

We carry an enormous range of umbrellas in different woods, colours and designs in our St James's Street store. However, we do understand that one of life’s great pleasures is to know that you have something that is unique to you. Indeed, many of our more adventurous patrons chose umbrellas with brightly coloured covers, or quirky twists.

Once upon a time, one of our most-requested special-order umbrellas was the sword umbrella. (No marks for guessing what it contained.)

The sword umbrella gained in popularity in the sixties, after it was carried by the character John Steed in cult TV series, The Avengers.

At one time, we went one step better and produced a gun version of our Malacca umbrella. The raison d'etre behind this umbrella was motivated by game keeping rather than by self-protection. If, when wandering around your country estate, you spotted some form of vermin, you could despatch it with the single shot primed within the cane. Sadly, neither of these umbrellas are sold by Swaine Adeney Brigg any longer: both have been classed as a "dangerous weapon."

Brigg customers may be less swashbuckling these days, but they are every inch as elegant.

A matter of personal taste

With our special-order umbrellas you can dictate your own brand of elegance from over forty different covers in three different materials, from over twenty different woods, three different lengths of cane and from several different constructions. Why stop there when you can even give each individual panel of the cover its own colour?

Every Brigg umbrella is crafted by hand in the traditional manner, to your own exacting requirements. Your umbrella can be personalised with a gold or silver band, engraved with initials or numerals.
